ABOUT US

Our property, "Walteela", is situated near Avenue Range in the Limestone Coast Region of South Australia.  Avenue Range is a reliable 24" rainfall area with an April to October growing season.  We run Poll Hereford seedstock herd in conjunction with a first cross prime lamb enterprise.  Our farm is a family run and owned operation.

History

Katrina's family joined the Australian Poll Hereford Society in 1951.  Cannawigra cattle have been sold throughout Australia and have met with good success over the years.  In the late 1970's the stud was significantly scaled back due to family circumstances.  It is only in recent years that there has been a focus on rebuilding cow numbers.  Show and sale results over the past 8 years indicate that investment in new genetics such as semen from Haroldson's Raider 2Z during the 1990's is now paying dividends.

In 1999, we had the opportunity to purchase the stud outright from Katrina's mother. We selected 28 registered females, mainly younger cows and heifers.  With these females and their progeny, in addition to 10 females already owned by Katrina, we will be calving around 100 head in 2007.  We are very excited about our future with Poll Herefords.

Breeding Objectives

We breed performance Poll Hereford seed stock for the commercial cattleman. Our clients are mainly self-replacing herds in the South East of SA & Western Districts of Victoria targeting the supermarket trade.  We are committed to building long term relationships with our bull buyers and have clients who have purchased regularly for over 20 years.

Particular emphasis is placed on the following traits in our breeding program -:

  • Doing Ability & Longevity

  • Calving Ease

  • Fertility

  • Milking Ability and Udder Structure

  • Adequate Muscling

  • Moderate Frame and Sensible Mature Cow Size

  • Above Average Growth to at least 400 days

  • Structural Soundness

  • Temperament

Our cattle run under commercial conditions. We do not have any irrigation and the only animals that receive grain are those for shows or multi vendor sales.

The Cannawigra herd has an MN2 status under the National Johnes Market Assurance Program and the cattle have been performance recorded with Breedplan since 1987. We record birth weight and have collected carcase data (EMA and fat scans) on our cattle since 1997.  We have also scanned for IMF (intra muscular fat) for the past six years.

In the past ten years we have made significant progress in the performance of our cattle by utilising performance data in conjunction with visual selection.
