To the memory of

W.A. CROUCH J.P.

1821-1899

William Allen Crouch came to Australia in 1845 and first visited Mt Gambier in 1847 when the only building was a slab hut police station. He described the scene “as a beautiful park like country not disfigured by fences”. He returned in 1850 and became storekeeper, postmaster, National Bank agent, land and shipping agent, surveyor and architect. Having studied architecture in England he designed many of Mt Gambier’s early buildings. After marrying Jane Fitzgerald in 1853 he built the first two storey residence and shop in the South East and the first ever built of Mt Gambier stone. In 1870 he moved to his property at Kalangadoo where he built Lowan Homestead and held seats on the Main Roads Board and the Penola Council. A jovial and good natured man he was renowned for his help and generosity to other settlers and for his many civic interests pertaining to the future benefit of Mt Gambier.
